You might remember I mentioned a couple weeks back that I’d gotten my ARCs of The Lives We Lost and to expect a giveaway? Well, it’s giveaway time! I wouldn’t normally be giving away copies this far before the release date, but as a thank you for all the support The Way We Fall has gotten, I’m offering one of these beautiful shiny ARCs so a lucky reader can continue Kaelyn’s story half a year early.

The giveaway has one rule: It is only open to those who have already read The Way We Fall. (After all, if you haven’t yet, what do you need the sequel for?) But don’t worry — if you’ve been planning to get to TWWF and just haven’t yet, the giveaway is open for two weeks, so you have lots of time to fix that. π
To enter, just fill out the form below!
The giveaway is open to readers worldwide.
Good luck!
I’ve known for a while I was going to need to redesign my website — the old format worked fine for standalone books, but it was going to be awkward providing info on a trilogy. I told myself I’d put it together when I had a cover for The Lives We Lost to share. Well, as you know, that happened while I was on vacation, so as soon as I got back, I went to work creating a whole new site. And now it is ready! You can check it out here.
The new design comes with some new content:
-All the info on The Way We Fall has been merged into a new Fallen World trilogy sub-site.
-The official jacket flap copy for The Lives We Lost is now up. (Warning: vague spoilers for those who haven’t ready The Way We Fall.)
-The soundtracks page includes the playlist and lyrics for The Lives We Lost‘s unofficial soundtrack.
-There’s a foreign editions page to show off the international covers and other info.
Hope you enjoy it!
And if you notice any problems with the content or the site functioning, don’t hesitate to let me know. π
I’m back! Got in from Istanbul last night; still recovering from the time change. I expect to have a trip report written up with lots of pretty pics in the next week or so. π
In the meantime, I’d like to share a few recs with you. As well as sightseeing, I used my vacation time to catch up on my reading, which has sadly fallen behind at home. I read eight books and started a ninth in the twenty days I was gone. Lots of good stories, but my absolute favorite of the bunch, the best book I’ve read so far all year, is Elizabeth Wein’s Code Name Verity.

You’ve probably already heard lots of wonderful things about this book. They are true. All I’ll say for myself is the book has so many elements I love in fiction but haven’t seen a lot of in YA lately: a story focused more on friendship than romance, strong but not invulnerable female main characters, unreliable narration, and heart-wrenching sacrifices. *happy sigh*
I also managed to stumble on some new music to put on repeat. Somehow I never happened to listen to Sara Bareilles before now, and her new EP is just lovely. Particularly fond of “Bright Lights and Cityscapes” and “Lie To Me”. Give ’em a listen!
What have you been reading and listening to while I was gone?
I am getting to do this sooner than I expected!
I’m very pleased to be able to share with you the cover of The Lives We Lost. Getting a cover for a book is always an exciting and anxious time, because as an author I’m generally only involved pretty late in the process. With The Lives We Lost, I was particularly curious to see how Hyperion would carry on the style of The Way We Fall‘s cover while making the sequel unique.
When I saw the first version of this cover (which looked very similar to the final product), I gasped. It is so beautiful and also fits the book so well, while keeping the continuity of the trilogy. I hope you love it as much as I do!

Let me know what you think! π And expect to see more information about The Lives We Lost up on my website soon (basically, as soon as I’m back home with my web design software, heh).
I’m briefly breaking my blog silence during my trip because I have more news than I feel like sitting on. π (Right now I am looking out over the rooftops of Selcuk, in Turkey — it’s a gorgeous view, one I wish I had every time I was posting here!)
1. The Lives We Lost, book 2 in the Fallen World Trilogy, is now available for preorder! You can find it at Amazon and Chapters-Indigo, and I expect the indies will have it put before too long. The Amazon link also has the short version of the jacket flap copy — I’ll share the longer version when I have permission, as well as the cover.
2. Canadians can preorder the paperback of The Way We Fall from Chapters-Indigo if they so wish. I’m not sure why this isn’t up elsewhere yet, but presumably it will be soon. There is no cover up with this listing, but as far as I know it should be the same as the hardcover’s.
3. Because of the above, we now have tentative release dates! If Amazon and Chapters-Indigo are correct, The Way We Fall will be out in paperback January 8, 2013, and The Lives We Lost on February 12. Please note, though, that these dates are still a long way off and may be adjusted.
4. Finally — The Lives We Lost ARCs are now in existence! I’m not sure when they will start being made available to reviewers (anyone at BEA want to check the Hyperion booth and let me know if they’re there?), but they have been printed, and my mom (who is collecting my mail while I’m away) has let me know that my copies arrived yesterday. You know what that means? When I get back, I think a giveaway will be in order…
More on that in two weeks!
Just a heads-up to anyone who might be looking for me online: I’m heading overseas for the next three weeks, so my presence here will be somewhere between spotty and non-existent. I may drop in from time to time, or not, depending on available internet connections and whether I feel like photo editing on the go. π I will be reachable by email if you need to get in touch.
And of course there will be a nice big picture post when I get back!
In case you somehow missed this, I would like to remind you all that a pretty awesome event is happening in Brampton this Saturday afternoon. Myself, R.J. Anderson, and Leah Bobet are descending on the Brampton Chapters around 2pm to sign books, talk about those books, and meet readers. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I will also be bringing lots of swag!
If you’d like to RSVP, there’s a Facebook page for the event here. Either way, we’d love to see you!
Hello Romanian readers!
I’m writing a post just for you because I’ve found out that a new edition of Give Up the Ghost is being published in Romania. I realize many of you already know this, but I thought it was important to mention in case there’s any confusion. Because not only is it a new edition, it’s also a new title:

The original Romanian version of Ghost was called Mai Las-o Moale cu Fantomele. The new one, as you can see, is Fantomele ne Stiu Toate Secretele. It’s going to be packaged with Bravo magazine and available on newsstands and kiosks, for probably about a month starting in late May. Very cool!
Despite the new title, it is the exact same book as the one that was released as Mai Las-o Moale cu Fantomele. It is not a sequel or a companion book (neither of these currently exists).
I’ve heard from quite a few of you asking if my second book, The Way We Fall, is going to be released in Romania. At the moment, Romanian rights haven’t sold — but that doesn’t mean they won’t. Rights to Ghost didn’t sell there until almost a year after the book came out in North America. If you want to try to hurry things along, you’re welcome to let Leda Books know that you’d like to see more books from me (it can’t hurt!). And you can always pick up the English version from Book Depository, which offers free shipping to Romania.
I hope to be able to share more of my stories with you soon!
And here we are at the end (for now): the final song from The Way We Fall‘s unofficial soundtrack, which is Marie Digby’s “Unfold”…
I put this song at the end of the list because I think it sums up Kaelyn’s growth during the course of the novel. She starts out awkward and anxious (“I shrink down to nothing/At the thought of someone/Really seeing me…” “Every word I say/Comes stumbling…”), but aware that she’s allowed herself to become this way (“These hands that I hold/Behind my back are/Bound and broken/By my own doing”). As she goes through all the pain and loss the epidemic brings, she starts to recognize her own value and the fact that she can decide whether her life is one she’ll be proud of (“I can’t live the rest of my life/So guarded…” “It’s up to me to choose/What kind of life I lead”).
While this is a story about a killer virus and a quarantine and a struggle to survive, I think it’s just as much the story of watching Kaelyn “unfold.”
