Reader Question: Blending the real with the unreal

In ‘Give Up The Ghost’ you focused more on Cassie’s everyday life than her paranormal activity. Was this intentional for the storyline (ie, her gift helped her personal life) or did it just happen that way?

Putting a lot of focus on Cass’s family and friend issues, rather than making it mostly about her supernatural ability, was definitely intentional. While I love stories with fantastical and paranormal elements, what I love most about them is how they can intensify the sort of everyday situations real people find themselves in and let us look at those situations from different perspectives. I think that “real” stuff is what readers end up relating to in the end, no matter how exciting the rest is. It’s certainly what I relate to when I’m writing! So it’s important to me to keep my stories grounded in reality.
