What I did on my Florida vacation

Florida was amazing! I returned to the cold and snow late Monday night, and I miss it and the people there very much.

Wednesday and Thursday nights, I did my presentations along with ghost storyteller Monica Ladd and the Gold Coast Paranormal Society as part of Palm Beach County Library’s Authors Love… Ghosts! program and had a wonderful time. A whole bunch of teens showed up and asked excellent questions about writing and publishing (as well as the obligatory “How much money did you get for your book?”). The library has put up several photos from the events here. Thank you to everyone who came!

I also got to hang out with my long-time online friend and crit partner, Amanda Coppedge, in person for the first time. So amazing how the internet allows us to connect with people all over, but it’s always extra special to get to meet those people face to face. 🙂

I got to meet a whole bunch more people on Friday when Amanda and I headed out to Key Largo for our retreat. We’d booked this amazing house near the beach, with four balconies and a huge patio:

I did much writing both outside on the balcony, and inside on the very comfy reclining couch:

Which is also where we had many discussions about books and writing and publishing and top secret things I cannot tell you about, or else I would have to kill you.

One of the particularly exciting features of the house is it was on a canal, and several manatee liked to swim along by and take a drink of fresh water from the hose. They were very playful, pushing each other around and rolling onto their backs, and they often came close enough that we could pet them. (Mostly hairless, kind of rough skin, like what I’d imagine an elephant might feel like. If wet.)

Alas, in the end we had to leave, but we did manage to capture the whole group on the last night, on a run to the nearby ice cream shop:

(Approximately left to right: Jessica Spotswood, Danielle Joseph, Jaclyn Dolamore, Amanda Coppedge, Mimi Curtis, Marjetta Geerling, Crissa-jean Chappell, and me.)

Can’t wait to hopefully do it again next year!
