The Way We Fall Launch Q&A Room

Hi! I’m the author, Megan Crewe.

Got a burning question about The Way We Fall? Or Give Up the Ghost for that matter? Want to find out more about the rest of the trilogy? Curious to hear my thoughts on topics relating to writing or publishing? Just want to shoot the breeze?

You can ask me anything and everything here, and I’ll do my best to answer thoughtfully and quickly, though I will be away from my computer for part of the afternoon. (I apologize in advance, but I will be forced to avoid giving away any information about the sequels that’s overly spoilery, and any info about me that’s overly personal.)

This includes a completely open discussion of The Way We Fall, so if you haven’t read the book yet, you might want to avoid reading the comments below — they may contain spoilers.

The Way We Fall Launch Q&A Room — 2 Comments

  1. Hi Megan!

I was wondering, what is your writing routine? Do you usually write at a certain time in the day? Do you listen to music or have a certain drink? I saw you mentioned working somewhere else while writing The Way We Fall. Was it hard to work and write a book at the same time? Also, I’m curious how long your books usually take you to write!

I would love to write a book one day! Sorry for being so curious! 🙂

    • I don’t mind curiosity at all! 🙂

I usually write for at least a couple of hours every morning, and then if I don’t have something going on that afternoon, another 2-3 hours then, after a break. I’ll sometimes listen to my book playlist to get into the mood of the story, but I rarely listen to music while I’m writing, or snack or drink. I find I work best when there’s nothing to focus on but the writing!

I’ve had a part time day job for the entire time I’ve been writing. I’ve mainly worked with kids after school and on weekends, which then has left my mornings free for the writing. There was a period while I was doing revisions on THE WAY WE FALL for my publisher when I had also taken on a full-time contract. I have to say it was incredibly hard, and I am in awe of people who manage to get books done while working full time all the time. To get through the revisions I basically had to let everything else slide–I don’t think I did anything except work, revise, eat, and sleep during those weeks.

The time it takes me to write a book varies from book to book, and also depends on how you measure that time. I wrote and revised (on my own–before selling the book) TWWF in about five months. But I’d gotten the initial idea a year beforehand, and it took me that year before I figured out the story I wanted to tell well enough that I could write it. I usually need to let an idea simmer for several months, if not a few years, before it’s ready to write. And once I am writing, I’m sometimes working on different projects in between drafts, so it can take a while to have a polished version ready just because I had to set the story aside for a few months here and there.

I tend to draft quickly once I’m ready to write, though. I average about 2-3 months for a first draft and 1-2 months for a second draft (I always do at least two).

      Hope that’s helpful!
