The end of a year, and the end of a decade

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

And oh what a year!

While the past decade has held a lot of big events and firsts for me (getting my own apartment, graduating from university, making my first pro short story sales, signing with an agent), the two biggest happened in 2009: the publication of my first novel, GIVE UP THE GHOST, and the purchase of my first house. So while there have definitely been ups and downs along the way, I can say with great certainty that this decade has ended well. :)

But what’s made it especially wonderful are all the amazing people I’ve met during that time. I can’t begin to thank my critique partners, fellow Debs and 2K9ers, and readers enough for all their support over the years, particularly this past one. You all are awesome!

I also read a number of excellent books this year. A few of my faves (not all published in 2009):

WINTERGIRLS by Laurie Halse Anderson
THE TREASURE MAP OF BOYS by E. Lockhart
THE BRILLIANT FALL OF GIANNA Z by Kate Messner
UN LUN DUN by China Mieville
SHADOWED SUMMER by Saundra Mitchell (technically read last year, but didn’t list it because it wasn’t out yet)
NATION by Terry Pratchett

And like most people, I’ve looking toward 2010 with goals in mind. Many of the things I’d like to accomplish are beyond my control, but the ones that are:

-Finish at least one more novel.
-Do at least one event for the paperback of GHOST (assuming there is a paperback; I haven’t gotten confirmation on this).
-Furnish and decorate at least one room of the new house so it looks “finished” (budget restricts us from doing the whole thing at once).
-Attend kung fu class at least once a week unless impossible, and earn my blue sash.
-Top secret goal writing-related I cannot share on this blog. :)

Thanks for sharing this exciting year with me! I hope the new year brings everything you’re hoping for and more!

Happy Holidays!

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

It’s been a busy week and it’s just going to get busier, but that’s all part of the fun. Wishing you all a wonderful holiday, whatever you celebrate, filled with family and friends and good food!

And a special thank you to those who are giving GIVE UP THE GHOST under the tree (or however you do your gifting)! Even Cass appreciates a little holiday cheer. :)

Five Literary Gifts

Friday, December 18th, 2009

Because it’s the season of holidays and gifting. :)

The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman – The alethiometer the Master gives to Lyra guides her on an adventure more treacherous than she ever imagined.

Lost It by Kristen Tracy – Tess hoped her Christmas present for her boyfriend would keep her on his mind, but instead it reveals an inadvertent lie.

The Queen of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner – An unwanted gift of a pair of earrings becomes the key to deciding two wars — one of politics, the other of the heart.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – The burnt loaf of bread Peeta offered kept Katniss’s family from starving, and ties her to him even when she tries to stand alone.

Nation by Terry Pratchett – It was meant as an act of self-defense, but the gun Daphne holds out and Mau accepts becomes the beginning of tragedy-defying bond.

Flashback: The Things You Learn From Birds

August 20, 1997 (Megan is 16)

We were canoeing around the lake (N and I) and as we were coming back into the bay we spotted a blue hero on the shore. As we watched, it stared into the water, leaned forward, paused, leaned closer, paused, then shot into the water head first, wings spreading over the surface of the water. When it emerged it was holding a sunfish in its beak. It flew off with the fish to eat it. That was really interesting to see.

Lesson of the heron — prepare yourself quietly, wait patiently, and when your goal is within sight, snatch it up as fast as you can.

A very exciting Monday

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Today is the day I am officially a house owner! Chris and I went by the lawyer’s office to pick up the key for our house…

And then of course we dropped in to experience the house for the first time as really, completely ours. I started things off by claiming the fridge with my magnets:

It’s not going to feel totally real until we move in, but I’m still giddy!

P.S. One more day to enter my end of 2009 giveaway!

More on Books of Wonder!

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

As promised, details of my trip to and event in New York! Many thanks to Deva Fagan for sharing her photos! :)

It was a very short trip — working around my day job, I flew in Saturday night, promptly crashed at my hotel in Newark, and then took the train into Manhattan Sunday morning. Did some Christmas shopping for Chris that I cannot say anything more about as he sometimes reads my blog, grabbed some lunch at Grand Central Station, and then headed over to Books of Wonder for the event.

I was immediately greeted by an immense display of all our books, which nearly made me squee out loud on sight. Then I went around back and saw the looooong table set up for us.

(All of us — Neesha Meminger, Jon Skovron, Michelle Zink, Deva Fagan, Sarah Cross, Kate Messner, Shani Petroff, and me — at the table with our books.)

I’d hung out most of my fellow authors back in May when I came down for BEA, but I was excited to meet Deva and Kate for the first time:

I was especially happy to get to talk to Deva in person as we’ve been friends and critique partners online for at least six years now, we figure. Hopefully it won’t be that long until we see each other again!

We started off by each reading a short section from our books:

And took several excellent questions from the audience. Then things got less formal as people started coming over to the table to get their books signed and chat with us. *waves to everyone who stopped by*

Afterward, a bunch of us went out for an early dinner with some family and friends included, and then I had to hop on a bus back to Toronto. Wish I could have stayed longer! I’ll do my best to make it back to the US sometime next year.

Flashback: Friend Trouble

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

February 14, 1996 (Megan is 15)

Well, gotta call N now and see what she thinks.

Which is basically nothing. She didn’t think it really mattered which in a way kinda ticks me off. I mean, she talks about X twice as long and I don’t say, well, I don’t think whatever really matters. I might say I don’t think it means something (in regards to whether he likes her or not), but saying it doesn’t matter is like saying it doesn’t matter to her. And it wasn’t like she was saying it so I shouldn’t let it bother me. She said it like she wanted to get on to some other topic. Don’t get any ideas neither — I’d only discussed it with her for about 5 minutes or maybe ten. It just annoys me. She never seems to care about my confusion over B but she expects me to explain everything about X to her and to listen to countless pointless stories about him…

Maybe I’m ignoring things I’ve done and forgotten but it seems like when I don’t want to do something for her, she’s all self-righteous like “I would do it for you” but when she actually has to do something for me she doesn’t want to.

I’m probably totally misinterpreting this, but oh well.
