Spring 2015 YA Scavenger Hunt!

Welcome to the 10th YA Scavenger Hunt!

I’m Megan Crewe, author of YA fantasy, paranormal, and science fiction novels including the Earth & Sky trilogy, the Fallen World trilogy, and Give Up the Ghost, and I’m your host for this stop in the tour.

This bi-annual event was first organized by author Colleen Houck as a way to give readers a chance to gain access to exclusive bonus material from their favorite authors…and a chance to win some awesome prizes! At this hunt, you not only get access to exclusive content from each author, you also get a clue for the hunt. Add up the clues, and you can enter for our prize–one lucky winner will receive one signed book from each author on the hunt in my team! But play fast: this contest (and all the exclusive bonus material) will only be online for 72 hours!

There are EIGHT contests going on simultaneously, and you can enter one or all! I am a part of the GREEN TEAM–but there is also a red team, a gold team, an orange team, a blue team, a teal team, a purple team, and a pink team for a chance to win a whole different set of signed books!

If you’d like to find out more about the hunt, see links to all the authors participating, and see the full list of prizes up for grabs, go to the YA Scavenger Hunt page.

SCAVENGER HUNT PUZZLE

Directions: Somewhere on this page, I’ve listed my favorite number (hint: the number is highlighted in green). Collect the favorite numbers of all the authors on the green team, and then add them up (don’t worry, you can use a calculator!).

Entry Form: Once you’ve added up all the numbers, make sure you fill out the form here to officially qualify for the grand prize. Only entries that have the correct number will qualify.

Rules: Open internationally, anyone below the age of 18 should have a parent or guardian’s permission to enter. To be eligible for the grand prize, you must submit the completed entry form by April 5th, at noon Pacific Time. Entries sent without the correct number or without contact information will not be considered.

The author I’m pleased to be hosting for the YA Scavenger Hunt today is… Melissa Grey!

Melissa Grey was born and raised in New York City. She wrote her first short story at the age of twelve and hasn’t stopped writing since. After earning a degree in studio art at Yale University, she taught English in Japan, pursued a Masters in art history at University College London, then returned to New York where she currently works as a freelance journalist. Her first novel, THE GIRL AT MIDNIGHT, will be published by Random House on April 28, 2015. To learn more about Melissa, visit melissa-grey.com and follow @meligrey on Twitter.

And this is her book, The Girl at Midnight — such a gorgeous cover!

Beneath the streets of New York City live the Avicen, an ancient race of people with feathers for hair and magic running through their veins. Echo is a runaway pickpocket who survives by selling stolen treasures on the black market, and the Avicen are the only family she’s ever known. When a centuries-old war crests on the borders of her home, she decides it’s time to act. Legend has it that there is a way to end the conflict once and for all: find the firebird, a mythical entity believed to possess power the likes of which the world has never seen. It will be no easy task, but if life as a thief has taught Echo anything, it’s how to hunt down what she wants.

Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? You can preorder the book here!

Here’s the exclusive bonus material! It’s a short piece that takes place ten years before the start of the book, when the main character Echo decides to run away from home and live in the New York Public Library’s flagship branch:

There’s a word in Latin that literally means “go with me.” Vade mecum. It refers to that one book you can’t live without. That one book that “goes with you.” For a young Echo, that book was From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. She carried her dingy, dog-eared copy with her everywhere. When she ran away from home at the age of seven, it acted as her roadmap. She found enough change in her couch cushions to get her to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where Claudia and Jamie Kincaid had found refuge. Unfortunately, the world had changed quite a bit since the 1960’s. Echo found that the Met, with its security guards and all-seeing cameras, wasn’t nearly as receptive to overnight guests as E.L. Konigsburg would have had her believe. Dejected, she walked nearly two miles down Fifth Avenue, stopping only when the cramps in her feet became too much to bear. And that was when she saw it. A beautiful old building guarded by two majestic stone lions. The New York Public Library, grand and opulent and full of the most important things in Echo’s world: books. Even as she ascended the steps leading to the front doors, Echo knew that her vade mecum hadn’t led her astray. It had led her home.

I love this, especially because I’m a huge fan of From the Mixed-Up Files — I must have read it a dozen times before I was 8 years old.
