The music of Give Up the Ghost: “Wise Up”

The tenth song from the unofficial Give Up the Ghost soundtrack is Aimee Mann’s “Wise Up”:

Lyrically, this song is one of the best literal fits for Give Up the Ghost (heck, the last words are “Give up”!), particularly for the last few chapters before Cass confronts Tim by the lake. I see the first verse as relating to Cass, getting what she wants (revenge) and finding it doesn’t fix any of her problems, that she’s still not happy. The second verse could easily refer to Tim, trying to cure his sadness by drinking. And the repeated message of “It’s not going to stop/until you wise up” could apply to both of them wallowing in the past, needing to really look and see what they have to live for.

It’s also just a lovely, low key song that fits the mood of that section of the story well. πŸ™‚
